The Roads & Transport Authority

The Licensing Agency at the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) stated that the RTA is heading towards imposing a fine of 10 dirham per month of delay in renewing all types of driver licenses following the lapse of 30 days from the expiry date of the license, in keeping with the rules and regulations applicable in this regard including Law No (6) issued by the Council of Ministers in 1994.

Commenting on the procedure, the Director of Drivers Licensing at RTA Licensing Agency Sultan Al Marzooki, said:”Levying this fine on each month of delay in the renewal of the driver license comes in the context of implementing the applicable law which provides for exercising control over driver license issuance & renewal process, and highlighting the legal implications of this issue to align them with the world’s best practices applicable in this regard.

“Imposing fines against any type of offences committed by motorists purposely or inadvertently does not stand in itself as a deterrent of such actions & practices, rather it serves as an organizational & enforcement measure that would ultimately foster the feeling of individual & communal responsibility among drivers, and strengthen their perception of the legal responsibility towards the concerned official entities including the RTA; which is making every effort to offer best-in-class services to drivers and road users. It also seeks to educate drivers by means of continuous campaigns with the aim of safeguarding the lives of

drivers & road users, maintaining public properties, and minimizing the occurrence of various road accidents.

“Drivers are offered a one-month grace period after the expiry of their driving licenses; which is believed to be quite sufficient for processing the renewal of the driving license in a hassle-free and transparent process. The introduction of this fine is therefore only intended to serve as a reminder to motorists of the importance of the timely renewal of their driving licenses, and avoiding delays the driver license renewal till the eleventh hour of the grace period offered,” said Al Marzooki in a final comment.
